It's that time of year again, holiday season is on the cards. Whether you have had your dates in the diary for months or you are a last minute kind of person you still need to consider what to pack! We spend a lot of our time going all over the place, and whether that is staying at friend's/ family's houses, having a weekend break or going away for longer we always have one thing with us without fail - our biodegradable travel case.
It's always really hard to travel with soap (especially when it's wet!!) without having to resort to a plastic container, so we were really thrilled to find these cases for sale. Previously we have even resorted to wrapping a wet soap up in tissues - you can imagine how that ended! We did a lot of research when we first started Ray of Soap, looking for a sustainable way to carry our bars of soap around with us, and we had no idea it was possible to manipulate wood in this way . . .
It's really hard to get your head around when you first hold one of these cases in your hand - it looks like plastic (it even feels a bit like plastic) but there is absolutely no plastic present at all. To be absolutely honest we don't understand very much of the manufacturing process at all, to us it just seems like magic. In basic terms it involves manipulating the cellulose fibres of Beech wood to make them into liquid form; this liquid is them fired into moulds and sets solid. The resulting travel case is strong and durable with a pleasant (but faint) woody smell as the only throwback to its true origins.
We have been happily using our personal travel cases for years (5 and counting in some cases (pun very much intended)) and we will be taking them down to Cornwall to join us on the next leg of our South West Coast Path adventure later in the month.
